Q & A with Max Jeffries

Why did you write Deadly Sense?

Upon completing Altered Sense, I immediately began plotting ideas for a sequel. Even as the author, I was captivated by Will's strange visions and the intricacies of his relationships with Ravi and Aubrey, and I knew there was still so much to explore. Altered Sense, in essence, laid the groundwork for Will's journey, granting me the freedom to delve deeper into his visions and explore the interesting concept of cause and effect stemming from his supernatural interventions. With Deadly Sense, I found myself venturing into darker territory, a progression that unfolded organically rather than by design. My aim was simple: to continue challenging Will's character, pushing him to confront ever-heightening stakes and grapple with the consequences of his actions.

What does your writing process look like?

I'm quite meticulous when it comes to plotting my books. Before I even start writing, I outline the entire story, envisioning major turning points and the ending. Despite this structured approach, I am also flexible, allowing the characters and storyline to organically evolve as I write. It's remarkable how characters seem to take on a life of their own, often leading the plot in unexpected directions, and this is why I will always leave room for smaller side plots to emerge naturally as the characters develop. It is this momentum that the characters develop which keeps the writing process exciting! Once I've outlined the plot, I dive into writing without dwelling on previous chapters. Despite the temptation to edit as I go, I prioritise getting the entire story down on paper before revisiting and refining it later. This approach allows me to compartmentalise the writing and editing processes, ensuring that each phase receives the attention and focus it deserves.

What are your plans for your future book(s)?

While I do have some ideas brewing for another Will Denham novel, my focus has shifted to a variety of other projects, each of which I am very excited about. Venturing into writing for younger audiences has always interested me, particularly as I seek to captivate readers in the age of streaming services. Currently, I'm working on a suspenseful, post-apocalyptic novel and also a fantastical adventure geared toward middle-grade children. Despite the divergence in genres, my passion for crime thrillers remains, and I also have a crime thriller set in Sydney in the 1860s I have just about completed. Juggling these diverse projects keeps me really engaged in my writing journey, and I really look forward to all the possibilities that lie ahead.
